James Meredith, center with briefcase, is escorted to the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford on Oct. 2, 1962. Escorting Meredith is Chief U.S. Marshal James McShane, left, and an unidentified marshal at right. To the far right is one of the U.S. Army troopers stationed on the University grounds.
